Overview
This surgery involves the removal of part or all of the thyroid or parathyroid glands to treat nodules, cancer, or hormone imbalances.
Symptoms/Indications
- Thyroid nodules
- Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swelling in the neck
- Elevated calcium levels (for parathyroid)
Preparation
Blood tests and imaging are required. Patients are advised to fast before surgery and review any medications affecting hormones.


The Procedure
Performed under general anesthesia, small incisions are made at the base of the neck to remove the affected gland(s). The surgery may last 1–2 hours.
Recovery Time
Patients often return home the same day or after one night. Voice rest and limited physical activity may be recommended for a few days.
