- Pilonidal Cyst Surgery
Overview
Pilonidal cyst surgery is performed to remove cysts or abscesses that form near the tailbone, typically caused by ingrown hairs. The goal is to eliminate infection, prevent recurrence, and relieve discomfort.
Symptoms/Indications
- Pain or swelling near the tailbone
- Redness or drainage from the cyst
- Fever (if infection is present)
- Recurrent abscess formation
- Difficulty sitting due to discomfort
Preparation
Before surgery, patients may need imaging to assess the cyst. Fasting is required, and a medical history review will be conducted. Instructions will be provided for hygiene and wound care post-surgery.

The Procedure
Performed under local or general anesthesia, the surgeon drains the abscess and removes the cyst and surrounding sinus tracts. The wound may be closed with sutures or left open to heal naturally.
Recovery Time
Patients can often go home the same day. Recovery may take 2–4 weeks depending on the surgical method. Wound care and hygiene are essential to prevent recurrence.
Risks and Benefits
Benefits: Pain relief, infection control, lower risk of recurrence
Risks: Infection, delayed healing, recurrence if the area is not kept clean
