Overview
Breast surgery may involve removing a small sample of tissue (biopsy) or removing abnormal growths while preserving healthy tissue (lumpectomy). These are often used to diagnose or treat breast cancer.
Symptoms/Indications
- Lump or mass in breast
- Suspicious imaging results
- Breast pain or changes in appearance
- Family history of breast cancer
Preparation
Patients are advised to avoid certain medications, fast if anesthesia is used, and discuss imaging results beforehand.


The Procedure
A biopsy removes tissue samples for testing. A lumpectomy removes the tumor and a margin of surrounding tissue. Local or general anesthesia may be used.
Recovery Time
Most patients return home the same day. Recovery may take 1–2 weeks depending on the procedure.
