Overview
Colon surgery is used to treat conditions such as diverticulitis, colon cancer, polyps, or obstruction. Part or all of the colon may be removed depending on the diagnosis.
Symptoms/Indications
- Persistent abdominal pain
- Blood in stool
- Change in bowel habits
- Diagnosed colorectal cancer
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Preparation
Bowel preparation is often required along with fasting. Blood tests and imaging studies are done beforehand.


The Procedure
The affected section of the colon is surgically removed, and the remaining parts are reconnected. This may be done laparoscopically or through open surgery.
Recovery Time
Hospital stay ranges from 3–7 days. Full recovery may take several weeks. Patients are closely monitored during this period.
Risks and Benefits
Benefits: Removal of diseased tissue, symptom relief, prevention of further complications
Risks: Infection, leakage at connection site, need for temporary colostomy
